Dementia Care
The Special Needs Unit at Huntington Living Center is a program dedicated solely to the provision of a safe and secure environment for those diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, dementia or other related disorders. The mission of this unit is to create an environment of care that allows the residents to maintain their independence for as long as possible. This 40-bed unit has been designed to allow residents to wander safely and freely, thus maximizing their personal freedom.
The Lounge Program of the Life Enrichment Program, provides therapeutic programming interventions for residents with Alzheimer's Disease or Alzheimer's-type dementia. It is designed to have a positive impact on behaviors, improve appetite and sleep, decrease wandering and improve overall well being for our residents.
All staff members on this unit are specially trained in dementia care. This training, along with the experience of caring for those with dementia, helps to foster a community spirit within the nursing unit. The unit programming provides a variety of useful and purposeful activities that focus on life skills, as well as recreational and spiritual needs.
