Sleep Laboratory

Covid Information

Sleep disorders can occur in both men and women of all ages.  A sleep study, or polysomnography, is a recording that contains several types of measurements used to identify different sleep stages and classify various sleep related problems. The Sleep Laboratory at Geneva General Hospital runs tests for various disorders, such as difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, sleep apnea, sleep disruptions, sleep walking, abnormal snoring, and other disorders. Each study requires an overnight stay at Geneva General Hospital in a private room designed similarly to a hotel room for the patient. Each study will require an overnight stay at Geneva General Hospital, arriving in the evening and leaving early in the morning.

The night of your sleep study, you will be asked to arrive at Geneva General Hospital at 8:00 p.m. and report to the Sleep Laboratory office on the second floor of the hospital.  Upon arrival, the Sleep Technician will greet you and show you to your room.  Your room will be similar to a hotel room, with a television, bathroom and shower.  While you are sleeping, various important body functions and measurements are recorded by a series of electrodes that will be affixed to your skin.  The technician will monitor your sleep from a nearby room throughout the night.  If a respiratory or breathing problem is observed during your sleep, the technician may awaken you to ask you to try a breathing apparatus.  You will be notified of such a possibility before you go to sleep.  If you have a commitment in the morning, such as getting to work at a certain time, please let your technician know.  The technician will arrange to wake you at the appropriate time.  If your family needs to contact you for emergency purposes during your sleep study, they may call the Sleep Laboratory at (315) 787-4335.  After your sleep study, you will probably have a follow-up visit with your doctor to discuss the results and further treatment.

For more information on sleep studies, contact your primary care physician.  He or she will determine if a sleep study is appropriate for you.  Ask about a referral to the Sleep Laboratory at Geneva General Hospital, (315) 787-4335.  To schedule an appointment, call Scheduling Services at  (315) 787-4555.
