Greenidge Generation Support Makes Possible New CT Scanner at SSMH

Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital, a critical access hospital in Penn Yan, New York, will purchase and install a new Philips Incisive 128 slice CT scanner by the end of the year, thanks to a very significant $75,000 donation made by Greenidge Generation.

The Finger Lakes Health Foundation has been fundraising for this new CT Scanner since 2020. Funds for the scanner were allocated from Soldiers & Sailors Capital budget, and Finger Lakes Health Foundation committed to raise funds in support of the project. The Foundation secured funding from Davenport-Hatch Foundation, Yates TB and Health Foundation and many generous individuals and businesses, yet still faced a gap in funding to meet the nearly $400,000 cost to purchase and install the system -- and ensure emergency power and other requirements.

A CT scan can be used to visualize nearly all parts of the body. Clinicians rely upon CT for many reasons including: to identify stroke; locate blood clots or tumors; detect and monitor cancers, heart diseases, lung nodules, and liver masses; evaluate bone and joint issues; visualize internal injuries and bleeding; and assess spinal problems and injury.

Computed tomography (CT scan) ranks as one of the top five medical developments in the last 50 years. CT scans can help improve the accuracy and success of health care, reduce the need for exploratory surgeries, and reduce the risk of complications in surgery. The CT Scan is non-invasive, painless and quick.

The CT Scan System at Soldiers & Sailors is the only one in Yates County. The current CT system at the hospital is 16+ years old and is a 16 slice CT. The new 128 CT Scan will deliver increased speed, lower dose radiation, and increased accuracy of diagnosis due to enhanced imaging.

Oupatients and inpatients at Soldiers & Sailors will have access to our new state-of-the-art CT technology. The Philips Incisive CT scanner system will be installed by year-end 2021 in the Diagnostic Imaging/Radiology Department on the ground floor of Soldiers & Sailors hospital lobby.
