Chibuikem "Dr. Chibu" Akamnonu, M.D. of Interlakes Orthopaedic Surgery, the region’s largest orthopaedic team, recently became Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.




Founded in 1934 as a private, voluntary, nonprofit, autonomous organization, the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery exists to serve the best interest of the public and the medical profession by establishing educational standards for orthopaedic residents and by evaluating the initial and continuing qualifications and competence of orthopaedic surgeons. For this purpose, the Board reviews the credentials and practices of voluntary candidates and issues certificates as appropriate. It defines minimum educational requirements for the specialty, it stimulates graduate medical education and continuing medical education, and aids in the evaluation of educational facilities and programs by its work in conjunction with the Residency Review Committee (RRC) of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).




Chibuikem “Dr. Chibu” Akamnonu, M.D., completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY and his specialty fellowship in spine surgery at New York University-Hospital for Joint Diseases, New York, NY. He earned his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons, New York, NY.




“Dr. Chibu” Akamnonu has extensive fellowship training in spinal conditions and offers comprehensive services to improve function and relieve back pain. He is also well trained and experienced in minimally invasive spine surgery for select patients aimed at less tissue disruption, improved post-operative pain, improved function post-surgery and a faster return to an active lifestyle.
