Scholarships & Awards
The Finger Lakes Health Foundation administers several scholarship and award programs that benefit our community:
The Kitty Wigsten Memorial Scholarship - this award was established in memory of Kitty Wigsten, longtime nurse and administrator at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital in Penn Yan. The scholarship is presented to a graduating senior or seniors of Penn Yan Academy who are pursuing a career in healthcare. Applications are available through the Penn Yan Academy Guidance Office.
The Gary Garverick Memorial Award - this award supports emergency medical services provided by Soldiers & Sailors or related agencies within Yates County. Agencies are invited to apply each year. Over the years, this award has been used to purchase specialized rescue equipment, medical equipment for ambulances, emergency pagers, locks to secure access to a women's shelter, and much more.
The Solera Scholarship - established in memory of Joseph Jakubowicz, a former employee of Dundee Central School, by members of his family and the Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies. The Solera Scholarship is awarded to a Dundee Central School graduate pursuing a career in healthcare. Applications are available through the Guidance Office.
John D. Kelly Memorial Award - established in memory of the former administrator of Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital to support a special project within the facility. The award benefits patients, nursing home residents, and staff.
Gladys Ansley Rector Memorial Scholarship - available to a member of the nursing staff at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital, including The Homestead, who is pursuing a B.S. in nursing at nearby Keuka College. The award was established by the late Richard Rector to memorialize his mother, who was a nurse at SSMH.
